ENT
Do you know: Nearly half of the world’s populations have some sort of ENT issue and only half of them get for primary care?
ENT is a medical abbreviation for ears, nose, and throat. Almost everyone has had a stuffy nose, clogged ears, or sore throat- all of these conditions are classified as ENT issues while there are many ranging from simple to severe ones at all stages of life.
Poor hygiene, imbalanced diet, and lifestyle are often the major causes of ENT diseases. Ayurveda has described ENT diseases as Shalakya Tantra. The conceived treatment for ENT disease in Ayurveda is based on the root cause of the disease amalgamated with the right diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies.
Myopia
Myopia or near-sightedness is a common condition related to vision. A person with myopia feels difficulty in seeing objects that are farther away. The objects near can be viewed without any difficulty.
This is highly prevalent in adults. Mostly, it is related to distance vision.
Primarily, it occurs when the shape of the eyes hinders the light rays. As a result, the images are focused in front of the retina instead of on your retina.
What are the symptoms of myopia?
The signs of myopia may include:
- Blurry vision when looked from a distance
- The need to partially close the eyes for viewing far away
- Headaches
- Difficulty driving a vehicle, especially at night
If a child is diagnosed with myopia, he may:
- Persistently squint
- Rub the eyes frequently
- Sits closer to the television, or the front of the classroom
- Remain unaware of distant objects
- Blink excessively
When to see a doctor
If you or anyone in your family is facing difficulties viewing far-away objects, see your doctor. Only a doctor can tell you about the degree of nearsightedness and advise you on treatment options.
Emergency medical care is needed when:
- You notice flashes of light in either of the eyes
- The appearance of shadows over your visual field
What causes myopia?
It is likely that if you have myopia, either or both of your parents had it too. The studies say that the structure of the eyes is the major cause.
When your eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, the light that enters your eye won’t focus the right way. This directs the light in front of the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, instead of directly on the retina. This causes vision to become blurry causing a refractive error.
There are two forms of myopia or nearsightedness:
High myopia. It is a more serious form where the eyeballs grow more than it is supposed to and enlarges. This form of myopia is linked to other conditions as well – glaucoma, cataracts, retina, to name a few.
Degenerative retina. Pathological or malignant myopia is linked to heredity. It is also called pathological myopia in which the eyeball gets stretched very quickly. Mostly, it happens in teenagers but the signs become severe as one age.
Risk factors
Scientists believe Myopia to be a result of hereditary and environmental factors. You may inherit myopia from your parents or either get it through changes in the lifestyle. For those with both parents with myopia, the chances of you getting myopia are very high. For lifestyle factors, if you have a habit of doing a lot of close-up work, such as using a computer or laptop or mobiles, you may develop myopia.
Myopia occurs in childhood but progresses with age. Because the light that enters the eyes is not directed rightly, you may get an unclear image.
Complications
Myopia is linked to many complications, such as:
Poor quality of life. Nearsightedness or myopia affects the quality of life of the person. You might not be able to view objects that are far away and distract yourself from leading daily activities.
Poor vision. This could be problematic especially if your work is related to driving a car.
Eyestrain. Uncorrected nearsightedness may put a strain on your eyes to keep focus.
Headaches. Frequent headaches are also common in such people.
Risk. Myopia is a risk to you and the people around you. Your own safety and those around is at risk if you have vision issues.
Other eye problems. Myopia elevates the risk of other eye problems such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic maculopathy. The tissues in the eyeballs are stretched and thinned triggering inflammation and scarring.
